A few weeks ago, a recording emerged of a Nigerian university student being propositioned by one of her lecturers to gave sex with him on an astonishing 5 sessions for a pass mark
The recording, featuring the shameful exchange with a man old enough to be the female student’s father, exposes what has become a scourge within the country’s education system particularly in higher institutions of learning whereby lecturers offer female students pass marks for sex and male students, large amounts of cash, was made by the student to expose the evil mindedness and exploitative nature of the lecturer Prof Rev Akindele Richard of the Obafemi Awolowo University’s Accounting Department
In 2010 Prof. Peter Otubu of the Engineering Faculty, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma offered to pass his 400 level student, Judith Okosun, if she agreed to sleep with him. She did and yet he failed her feigning not to have remembered her matriculation number. He unbelievably invited her for sex again promising to pass her this time.
She cleverly turned the tables on him by inviting him to her off campus apartment instead of meeting him at a hotel. As soon as he took his clothes off, she ripped them to shreds and got her neighbours to video his humiliation.
• Female voice: Judith
• Judith: Uhh
• Femaile Voice: I wan talk to you
• Lecturer: You don naked me now
• Judith: (apparently calling the man) Otubu
• Lecturer: Yes?
• Judith: Otubu?
• Lecturer: Yes?
• Judith: Oh. Sheybi you for don pass me (meaning she already got a passing grade from an earlier sexual encounter with the professor) , make I go. It is better than all this sweat.
• Lecturer: the other time I didn’t know your number then
• Judith: Ah, ahn, you didn’t know…you did it intentionally
• Lecturer: No, no, no no
• Judith: So that I will come and you’ll do it again , so that you will f**k
• Lecturer: Me!*
The fall out was Prof. Otubu lost his job, his wife died from depression and he is presently estranged from his kids. Amazingly, Judith Okosun was re-victimized by being rusticated from the University for 6 semesters despite previously complaining of her plight and being ignored until she took the law into her own hands.
It’s now Prof. Richard Akindele’s turn to bask in the spotlight of infamy.
One hopes these embarassing exposures will cause randy and grubby fingered Nigerian lecturers to desist from this most despicable of acts
University Authorities must also find a way to put a stop to lecturers exploiting their students by thoroughly investigating claims and accusations of sexual harassment made by students against their lecturers and carry out appropriate action to punish offenders rather than sweeping this serious academic problem under the rug leaving students to take the law into their own hands.
