Abraham appeal

Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh, leading the investigation from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “It has been eight months since Abraham was gunned down on the street in Hackney and we have been working tirelessly to find out what happened that night and bring those responsible to justice. We have followed up more than 600 lines of enquiry and viewed 200 hours of CCTV footage.

“We have been piecing together the details of Abraham’s life and making good progress and that has led to this arrest today. The arrest is as the result of a separate line of enquiry, not linked to the rape trial Abraham previously gave evidence at.

“However, despite the progress we are making, there are still significant gaps and we urgently need the help of Abraham’s friends and anyone else with information to come forward. There remains at least five potential witnesses on the street that night who have not come forward and there may be others who have information they don’t think important but could be crucial for us in filling in the picture of Abraham’s life.

“We believe Abraham had a number of girlfriends and we are keen to know who they were. It is possible that he may have been seeing someone who was in another relationship, and I’m appealing for anyone with this sort of information to contact me.

“Did Abraham confide in you about his worries? Did you notice any change in his behaviour? I know that this could be tricky, but I assure you we are solely interested in piecing together Abraham’s life.

“We also really need to hear from anyone who saw a male cycling in the area around the time of the murder on a white bicycle – this could be the killer. Help us catch him.”

Police were called at 23:11hrs on Sunday, 25 March to Ferncliff Road, E8, following reports of gunshots heard. Abraham, a personal trainer, was found suffering from shotgun injuries and died at the scene from a shotgun wound to the chest.

Moments after the shooting, a black male believed to be wearing a black Puffa-type jacket made off from the scene on foot, before getting on a bicycle; he had rucksack on his back. The bicycle is described as white and didn’t have any lights.

Officers believe there are still a number of witnesses to be traced and previously released a timeline of Abraham’s final movements in a bid for them to come forward.

Saturday, 24 March:

22:00 to 00:00hrs: Abraham was at Restaurant Ours in Chelsea at a birthday meal. It is believed that Abraham was in the company of about nine or 10 other friends.

Sunday, 25 March:

00:00hrs: Abraham travelled in convoy with others in vehicles to a nightclub at the Arbor Hotel, E1. He remained in the venue until about 0:10hrs. He spent the night with a woman.
16:00hrs: Abraham travelled to Brent Cross Shopping Centre where he remained until 17:30hrs.
18:00hrs: Abraham went to his father’s address in Colindale, north London.
21:10hrs: Abraham ordered and collected food from 805 Restaurant, NW4.
21:40 to 22:15hrs: Abraham remained at his father’s address.
22:20 to 22:40hrs: Abraham visited a woman before travelling home. During the journey home he had a phone call with a woman lasting 44 minutes.
23:11hrs: Abraham was fatally shot while he was still on the phone.

DCI Noel McHugh said: “We remain keen to trace each and every person who was in the area that night – even if you think you didn’t see or hear anything, we need to eliminate you from our enquiries. It may be you have information you don’t think is relevant but please let us be the judge and come forward. I would rather get the same information 40 times, than for that critical call to not be made.

“I think that there is an assumption in the community that someone else will make that call. Clearly that hasn’t happened and I need your call. Abraham’s mother is in so much pain, not only with the loss of her son, but the silence from those who could help catch his killer is ripping her apart.

“Every day, Abraham’s family have to live knowing that the person who did this is still out there. Someone knows who killed Abraham; I have said the answer lies in the community and I still believe that.”

The tag #AbrahamBadru has been added to many tributes posted via social media.

DCI McHugh is urging people to take to social media and the internet to appeal for information regarding Abraham’s murder by sharing the appeal poster.

He added: “In addition to contacting police, I urge those friends and associates of Abraham to get a conversation going by sharing the appeal poster online. You all have an opportunity to energise the appeal.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the incident room on 020 8785 8099, via 101 or @MetCC. Alternatively, to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
