A man has been jailed for ten years for sexually abusing a young girl in the 1990’s.
53 year old Carl Johnson, of Bowden Drive, London, SE21 was last month found guilty at Kingston Crown Court of eight counts of indecent assault after a five-day-trial.
On 28 September, he was at the same court, sentenced to ten years in prison.
The offences were committed against the victim between 1991 and 1995 when she was between the ages of 13 and 15. He would have been around 27 years old at the time of the abuse.
Johnson took advantage of his position as a member of the church community at a Battersea Church and the young victim’s naivete to groom her.
Over time, he escalated the grooming into full blown sexual abuse over period spanning at least 4 years.
The victim came forward in 2014 and reported the abuse to the police who immediately opened an investigation.
Speaking on the case, DS Amanda Kearsley of the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command, said: “Johnson is a predatory offender who deliberately targeted a vulnerable child. Johnson was part of the same church community as the victim and he should have been there to provide support; instead he groomed her before committing offences over a prolonged period.
This has been a long and emotional process for the complainant. I would like to praise her courage and commitment to making sure Johnson was convicted. She has ensured he in not longer a risk to other young people.”
