Nigerian Lawmaker Slumps And Dies While Out Jogging

A member of the Cross Rivers State House of Assembly slumped and died while on an early morning workout on Wednesday.

Steven Ukpukpen, who represents Obudu Constituency in the Cross River House of Assembly, was said to have collapsed around 7.00am along Moore Road in Calabar, while he out jogging.

All first aid efforts to revive him failed and he was later pronounced dead at the hospital he was transferred to

Cross River State governor, Senator Ben Ayade described as shocking and devastating the sad news of the lawmaker’s death.

In statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Christian Ita, the governor said the sudden passing of Ukpukpen had left him in a state of shock and disbelief.

He said he was completely numbed and bewildered that the state had lost such a vibrant intellectual who, as a lawmaker was deeply committed to the effort of his administration to build enduring legacies and bequeath strong economy for the people.

Ayade expressed regret that Ukpukpen died at such a young age, especially when the state most needed his skills and expertise.

He commiserated with the lawmaker’s immediate family, the State House of Assembly, the people Of Obudu and the entire state over the loss.

Man Charged With Smuggling After Boy 16, Was Found In A Suitcase At Dover Port

A man has been charged with smuggling after a Vietnamese child was found inside a suitcase at the Port of Dover.

The boy, believed to be aged 16, was taken to hospital in a life threatening condition following his discovery by UK Border Force officials at about 20:30 BST on Wednesday.

Andrei Iancu, 20, from Buzau in Romania, was charged with attempting to smuggle a person into the UK.

He remains in custody and is due to appear before Medway magistrates later.

The suitcase was found in the boot of a silver Skoda Octavia stopped at a search area for vehicles arriving in the UK from France.

Kent Police said the boy’s condition has since improved.
