Doctor Jailed For Causing Death Of His Daughter While “Driving Like A lunatic” To Get Her To Maths Class

Dr Chizoro Edohasim was jailed for four years after being found guilty of causing the death by dangerous driving of Olivia, nine, and a second count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving of another daughter Eva, 11.

As he was being sent down by the trial judge,  Edohasim was said to  have caused his own daughter’s death while ‘driving like a lunatic’.

He had been at the wheel of his Toyota Auris in May 2016 when it raced through a red light at speeds of up to 59mph in Altrincham and crashed into a brick wall.

Olivia died at the scene while Eva spent a month in hospital with serious abdominal injuries.

After Judge Stuart Driver QC sentenced Dr Edohasim at Minshull Street Crown Court, the medical researcher had to be dragged from the dock to start his custodial term.

His wife Bethel wailed: “This is not justice – we have lost our daughter.”

She later spoke to the Manchester Evening News about the impact the trial – and her husband’s sentence – has had on the family.

“The way this case has been handled is appalling,” she said.

“What happened was an accident and we lost our daughter Olivia.

“Nobody seems to care about the children or us as a family.

“We have not been given the chance to grieve or come to terms with what happened to us.

“What do I tell the girls when I get home?

“They are very close to their dad, he is involved in every part of their lives.

“On that Saturday he was taking them for a maths lesson. He wants them to achieve their full potential.

“What has he done wrong? Don’t accidents happen any more?

“In whose interest is this? It is not in my children’s interest, it is not in the public’s interest.

“We are the ones suffering here. My daughters have lost a sister and now they are losing their dad.”

Mrs Edohasim, 42, a part-time teacher, revealed the agony of having to break the news to Eva that her sister had died.

“I couldn’t tell her straight away,” she said.

“She was in intensive care for two weeks, so I didn’t want to tell her much.

“We broke the news to her when she was back on the ward. She was devastated and crying. It was heartbreaking.”

Mrs Edohasim also gave a moving tribute to Olivia, saying: “She was the kind of child everyone would wish for – honest, bright, smart, got on with everyone.

“If there was a child in the playground who had no-one to play with she would go over and give them a hug and play with them. She was that kind of girl.”

Mrs Edohasim said she and her daughters had sent a series of letters to the judge.

“I have heard that in cases like this the victim’s views are sought,” she said.

“We are the victims, but they have not asked me or the children for our views.

“With this kind of sentence, somehow we don’t seem to matter.”

“The fact that he was driving the car when his daughter died is mental torture for him.

“We are law-abiding citizens, we have paid our taxes and we have never been in trouble with the law. It doesn’t make sense.”

Passengers In Fear As Door Falls Off Dana Air Plane

Passengers on board a Dana AIr flight have been telling of their scary experience when the door of the aircraft simply fell of as the plane landed in Abuja.

PREMIUM TIMES had earlier reported how some passengers expressed fear when the door of the aircraft fell off while taxing in Abuja airport. The airline did not clearly state were the flight was coming from, although it indicated it may have been coming from Lagos.

One of the passengers on the flight, Dapo Sanwo, said the door panel was loose all through the flight, and described it as an indication of ‘lack of maintenance’.

Another passenger, Ola Brown, who took to her twitter page to vent her frustration, said the experience was scary.

“Flew Dana. Exit door was unstable throughout flight. As we touched down, it fell off. Scary stuff,” she wrote on twitter.

“I was closer to the front so when I heard the sound, (I) thought it was an explosion. (I) couldn’t quite comprehend that it (the door) had just fallen off…”

The management of Dana Air on Wednesday said the door of its aircraft fell off because a passenger attempted to open it.

A statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES and signed by Kingsley Ezenwa, Media and Communications Manager at Dana Air, said the incident could not have happened if no one tried to open the door.

“We wish to state categorically that this could never have happened without a conscious effort by a passenger to open it (exit door),” the statement said.

But Mr. Ezenwa in his reaction Wednesday said by design, the emergency exit door of the airline’s aircraft are plug-type backed by pressure, which ordinarily cannot fall off without tampering or a conscious effort to open by a crew member or passenger.

“We also wish to enlighten the author that, when an aircraft is airborne, it is fully pressurized and there was no way the seat or door could have been ‘shaking’ as insinuated,” the statement explained.

It said further that a thorough inspection was however carried out on the said aircraft upon landing in Abuja, by the airline’s engineers and a team from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and no issue was reported.

“There was also no threat to safety at any point,” he said.

“The flight was only delayed for 8 minutes as we needed to demonstrate to the regulators that the safety and comfort of our guests is at the centre of our operations.

“We wish to apologise to our guests for any inconvenience such report may have caused and for the slight delay on the return service to Lagos.”

The statement concluded that a thorough investigation of the concerned passenger was ongoing.
