Ata Ikiddeh writes: My family was part of the liberation struggle in Southern Africa in the 70’s. I was a child then, but I remember my father and mother sheltering Rodesians and South Africans atvour home. The late Prof Uya and my dad ran a fundraising programme to highlight the plight of fleeing South Africans. It’s why I find the script playing out in Zimbabwe intriguing , it’s a part of my childhood and a struggle I share”

While it’s difficult to piece together what exactly is going to become of Zimbabwe after the events of recent days, however history gives us a peek into the key actors in the drama currently playing out.

Now, this is the story tat many dont’t know.

Robert Mugabe the deposed President of Zimbabwe, Constantine Chiwenga the Head of the Zimbabwean Military and Mnangagwa the sacked Vice President of Zimbabwe were all very good friends and they were comrades when as young men in their 20’s  they entered the jungle and took part in the liberation struggle to free Zimbabwe from white rule.

When Mugabe became the Secretary General of ZANU PF, and later the head of state, the other two men were equally given plum positions of power and have continued as the 3 musketeers presiding over the destiny of Zimbabwe for 37 years.

Sometime in the 90’s – Mugabe, the first musketeer had an affair with his personal secretary who happened to be married to another man. The lady was Grace. While Mugabe was still married to his former wife, Sally, he and Grace had children together.

In 1996 they became man and wife after the death of Mugabe’s first wife.

But Grace was no ordinary mistress turned wife. She was not ready to take a backseat and, she turned herself into Mugabe’s political confidant. Very soon, she made her way into the very centre and top of Zimbabwean politics straining the relationship between Mugabe and his two comrades.

Mnangagwa the 2nd musketeer after many years of loyalty became Mugabe’s Vice President in 2014, paving the way for his eventual hold on power following Mugabe’s retirement or demise.

But Grace had other ideas .

She wangled her way into ZANU PF’s politburo and began her move to take out Mnangagwa and eventually take power from her ailing husband.

In August 2017 Mnangagwa accused certain persons in the party of trying to poison him and made references to Grace. This didn’t go down well with Mugabe, how could anyone accuse his beautiful Serengeti Rose flower.

What Mugabe forgot was that boys are allowed to fight but the brotherhood must stay strong and united. In a move that shocked everyone (but not his beloved Grace) , he removed Mnangagwa from the position of Vice President.

Mnangagwa fearing his life was in great danger, fled to South Africa.

Now, in comes the 3rd musketeer Chiwenga Head of the Zimbabwaean military, a friend and brother of both Mugabe and Mnangagwa, “this is all the fault of one woman”, he is probably thinking in his mind.”  We were one until this woman came. I trust Mnangagwa to takeover but I don’t know this woman. By the way, where was she when we were sleeping in the bushes before the liberation?” He must have been thinking in his mind.

Chiwenga sends a warning to Mugabe advising him to put his house in order. This was the first time he has ever spoken this way to his senior comrade. Thinking Mugabe will take the hint and , call him to negotiate and talk things over a cup of tea but – NO! Mugabe does the exact opposite.

He sends his Minister of Information to tell the Army General to stay out of State matters.

Mugabe then finalises plans to sack Chiwenga perhaps to pave an unhindered route to the throne for Grace.

The military chief thought this had gone too far.

His brother and comrade in arms had drunk deep from the strange woman’s bosom and it’s wasn’t him acting any longer.

So on the morning of the 15th November, he rolled out his tanks and seized power  from his former friend.

He’s therefore right when he says,”this is not a coup” When you really look at it, it’s really about three friends who have only fallen out over the inordinate ambitions of a woman.

Latest reports say Mnangagwa the 2nd Musketeer is on his way back from South Africa. Unconfirmed reports say he’s going to be installed interim President.

The 1st Musketter Mugabe is under house arrest. The 3rd Musketter is in the saddle promising calm and quick elections.

The 3 men have held Zimbabwe under lock and key for 37yrs.

This is nothing but a change of baton.

Zimbabwe needs a real revolution out of the hands of the veterans of the liberation struggle. No doubt in the 21st century Zimbabwe is the frozen out Animal Farm in George Orwells celebrated work.

Meanwhile the woman Also known as Gucci Grace, who started the whole chaos,  has fled the country leaving her beloved husband who sacrificed everything, to face an uncertain fate.

16m Zimbabweans could not remove Mugabe but a woman did.

The woman who shared his bed also brought about his downfall.

A 65-year-old man who was found guilty of rape aged 19 and sentenced to life in jail has today walked free after his conviction was overturned.

Wilbert Jones hugged relatives outside the gates of East Baton Rouge Parish Prison in Louisiana after spending almost five decades wrongly behind bars.

“Freedom. After more than 45 years and 10 months. That’s going through my mind,” he said.

“I forgave. I forgive,” he added. “I didn’t have control of it. Why should I worry about it? I’m in charge of myself.”

State District Judge Richard Anderson said authorities withheld evidence that could have exonerated Mr Jones decades ago and their case against him was “weak at best”.

His lawyer Emily Maw praised “the extraordinary strength” of a man “who has spent over 16,000 days in prison for something he didn’t do” and would nevertheless “come out with a faith in God and in humanity”.

Prosecutors said they do not intend to retry Mr Jones but they also said they would ask the Louisiana Supreme Court to review last month’s decision by the judge.

Court spokesman Robert Gunn said on Wednesday morning that no such request had yet been filed.

Ms Maw said that it would be “legally incorrect and morally problematic” if the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office insists on trying to uphold the conviction because by doing so it would be “saying that when Wilbert Jones was arrested in 1972 as a young, 19-year-old poor black man, he did not deserve the rights that people deserve today”.

Mr Jones was arrested on suspicion of abducting a nurse at gunpoint from a Baton Rouge hospital’s car park and raping her behind a building on the night of October 2 1971.

Prosecutors said they do not intend to retry Mr Jones (AP)

He was convicted of aggravated rape at a 1974 retrial that “rested entirely” on the nurse’s testimony and her “questionable identification” of Mr Jones as her assailant, the judge said.

The nurse, who died in 2008, picked Mr Jones out of a police line-up more than three months after the rape, but she also told police that the man who raped her was taller and had a “much rougher” voice than he had.

Mr Jones’s lawyers claim the nurse’s description matches a man who was arrested but never charged in the rape of a woman abducted from the car park of another Baton Rouge hospital, just 27 days after the nurse’s attack.

The same man also was arrested on suspicion of raping another woman in 1973, but was only charged and convicted of armed robbery in that case.

Judge Anderson said the evidence shows police knew of the similarities between that man and the nurse’s description of her attacker.

“Nevertheless, the state failed to provide this information to the defence,” the judge wrote.

A Sainsbury’s shopper says he was physically sick after cracking open an egg and discovering a rotten chick inside.

The shock find was made by Aled Holocombe, who had bought the 85p pack of eggs from a store in Cardiff.

He has posted a stomach-churning video showing the green sludge that came out of one when he cracked it.

The 24-year-old said his flatmate was also ill because of the rotting chick.

Sainsbury’s has apologised for the mishap.

Aled believes that a chick had began to develop in the shell, but had died at some point during the production process.

A rotting chick was found inside the egg

Aled posted a series of pictures to the supermarket’s Facebook page on Saturday with the caption: “Well we won’t be buying eggs from Sainsbury’s again. How the hell did this make it through quality control, almost chundered everywhere.”

The pictures show two cracked egg shells and a green and mouldy looking liquid in a bowl.

Aled also posted a picture of the egg box, which said the egg would expire on 14 November.

He also added a short 10-second-clip where he turns the bowl around and zooms in to give a close up of the mould.

The eggs were well within their best before date

Aled said: “It looked as if a chick had started to develop in the shell but had most likely died in the production process.

“As a result it rotted inside the egg until I cracked it. It wasn’t mild as such, it was just extremely rotten. The smell made me and my housemate actually vomit.

“It was literally the hangover from hell. It definitely made our hangover 10 times worse.”

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “We’ve apologised to Aled for this unpleasant find. This type of problem is extremely rare and we work closely with our suppliers to prevent this from happening.”

Kayleigh Bradshaw, from York, claimed she nearly choked on a piece of glass that she found in a packet of pre-cooked chicken from Sainsbury’s.

The 24-year-old bit into a piece of chicken to discover a shard of glass – which she nearly swallowed.

In February of this year an Aldi customer was disgusted to find maggots wriggling around in a pack of free range eggs that they bought from a store in Cranbourne, Victoria.

A sexual predator who raped a woman after drugging her and breaking into her home was caught when he used her bank card in McDonalds.

Daniel Wallace, 33, was traced by police after buying a meal in McDonalds in Hoe Street, Walthamstow.

Wallace was found guilty of rape and burglary at Blackfriars Crown Court and has been jailed for 12 years.

The court heard how, in the early hours of September 11 2016, the woman, aged in her 20s, was followed by Wallace as she walked back to her Canonbury home after spending the evening with friends.

Her next recollection was lying on her sofa, unable to move, with a man on top of her.

She woke up the next morning naked in her bed with injuries and found valuables belonging to her and her housemates were missing.

Wallace was caught after buying food in McDonalds in Hoe Street, Walthamstow (pictured).

After reporting the incident to police and while awaiting results from forensic tests, the woman’s bank card was used by Wallace in McDonalds.

Wallace of Weymouth Terrace, Hoxton, was spotted on CCTV with an unknown man and was arrested.

He was also linked to the crime by forensic tests.

He was found to be in possession of what the judge described as a ‘Rape Kit’ after the attack, which had lubricants, the drug GHB and Viagra.

During interview, Wallace remained silent to all questions.

He was charged with rape and burglary but denied both offences.

He was found guilty of burglary in June and guilty of rape at a re-trial last week.

Detective Constable Colin Hutton, the investigating officer from Met’s Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command, said: “Wallace is a dangerous sexual predator who preyed on a vulnerable woman as she made her way home after enjoying an evening out with friends.

“He then drugged and raped her in her own home and then proceeded to burgle the property while she was passed out cold as a result of the GHB he gave her.

“The items found on Wallace upon his arrest show the preparations he had taken to carry out this attack and indicates that he may have been planning to carry out similar offences in the future.

“I would like to praise the victim’s courage for reporting this heinous crime to us and for helping us to put Wallace behind bars and off London’s streets.

“I hope today’s sentence will give the victim some measure of closure and comfort.”
