UK: TORY CHANCELLOR HAMMOND IN PLAN TO RAID PENSION POT FOR OLDER BRITISH WORKERS

CHANCELLOR Philip Hammond is considering slashing pension tax relief for older workers to fund a wave of cuts for those in their 20’s and 30’s, according to insiders.

A research paper published by the House of Commons has outlined the Government’s plans to reform pension tax relief, with those in the last years of their employment in the firing line.Pension tax relief is the top-up paid to pension savers by HMRC.

For every £80 a basic rate taxpayer saves, the Treasury pays £20, or 20%.

Higher rate taxpayers, or those paying 40% income tax, get an even better deal.

For every £60 they pay into a pension, the Revenue tops up the fund by £40.

For additional rate taxpayers, or those paying 45%, the amount rises to £45.

However, these payouts are costing the Treasury billions of pounds a year – in 2015/16 the Government says it paid £38.2 billion in tax relief, with nearly half going to higher rate tax payers and 12% to additional rate tax payers. In an effort to cut this bill, Mr Hammond is thought to be considering leveling pension tax relief to 20% for everyone in his upcoming Budget – slashing the amount older workers can claim on their contributions.

A report published in The Telegraph suggests the Chancellor will use the profits to fund big cuts to national insurance contributions for workers in their 20’s and 30’s in a bid to promote ‘intergenerational fairness’.

Philip could end up slashing pension tax by 20 per cent for older workers to fund other cuts
Hammond is thought to be floating ideas with his MPs after having to scrap a planned rise in national insurance contributions for the self-employed earlier this year as well as the co-called ‘dementia tax’ that saw the Conservatives face heavy criticism during the general election. The source says Hammond wants to be ‘bold’ and to ‘restack the deck for the next generation’.

However, industry commentators have widely slammed the idea, condemning the Treasury for its constant raids on British pension pots.

How much should I put in my pension?

Nigel Green, CEO of global consulting group deVere labelled the idea ‘fundamentally flawed, short-sighted and counterproductive’: He said: “This attack on people’s retirement nest eggs demonstrates once again that the British Government, which needs to bolster its coffers, views people’s retirement savings as easy, low-hanging fruit to be plundered.”

He added that ‘now more than ever’ British workers needed to be incentivised to save for their retirement as pensions have increasingly become a ‘personal responsibility’, rather than a perk of employment.

NIGERIA: UPDATE ON THE MAINA SAGA – ROTTEN TOMATOES FROM JONATHAN’S ADMINISTRATION

UNFORTUNATELY
Many decomposed tomatoes that have been sitting at the bottom of the basket of Jonathan’s rotten tenure are dripping their putrid juices all over the place……and most unfortunately all over current President Buharis carefully laundered and ironed agbadas…

News emerging from Abuja has it that the Maina saga started way before Buhari came into power.

The N100bn was stolen from the Pensions Fund from right under Jonathan’s nose in 2013 but he was allowed to leave the country without facing prosecution.
It is also emerging that although Maina was dismissed from service, he reportedly lodged an appeal against the dismissal but that WAS NOT contested by the then administration under Jonathan – thus giving a legal twist to Maina’s right to be reinstated.

But who knows just what version of events to follow.
I don’t believe anything coming out of that country anymore.

Master Spin Doctors Alistair Darling and Max Clifford will be so envious!
