A shooting incident today claimed the lives of at least 12 people as unknown armed assailants invaded St. Philip Catholic Church Amakwa Ozobulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. The rampaging gun men shot at worshippers during an early morning mass in the church killing at least 12 church members while four persons sustained various degrees of injuries.
The deceased and Injured victims have been conveyed to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi. Police sources told Saharareporters that their preliminary investigation shows that it is a drug related gang case in which the father of one of the gang leaders had been a target during today’s attack.
Unconfirmed reports also allege that the two gang members involved do not reside in the country but live abroad in the US or UK.
Witnesses said five gunmen in masks stormed the church and opened fire on worshippers. They feared that up to 20 people may have died.
But the Anambra State Police Commissioner Garba Umar said the attacker was a lone gunman, who “went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding” worshippers.
Witness Chukwuma Emeka said he had just stepped out of the church to stretch his legs “when I heard gunshots and screaming and people running inside.”
“When the chaos subsided I went inside, I saw my fellow church members dead in a pool of their own blood and many others were screaming in pain.”
Security agents were said to have cordoned off the church.
