MAN ACCIDENTALLY KILLS HIMSELF AFTER “50 SHADES” STYLE BONDAGE GAME GOES HORRIBLY WRONG

A GAMEKEEPER was found dead in a farm building with his hands tied behind his back after an erotic asphyxiation went wrong, an inquest heard.

Toby Rose experimented by hanging himself and kicking away a chair for brief periods before his girlfriend caught him, after he had confided he liked to engage in the 50 Shades-style activity.

The 23-year-old is thought to have accidentally hanged himself after carrying out the activity on his own, Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford heard.

Reading from a statement made to police by Mr Rose’s girlfriend, Jade Wilkins, the coroner said: “Quite early on in your relationship he confided in you and said bondage was something he engaged in. He explained that hanging himself up was a feature.

“You accepted what he told you but you made him promise that he would not do it when you weren’t there. You said: ‘I never do any of the hanging, he always did it for himself.’

“He would suspend himself by his hands and you say that that he started experimenting more and more and it became more and more dangerous and that he would use a plank of wood or a chair.

“He would kick his leg from the chair and hang from the ceiling. That’s how it worked. He then started tying his own hands behind his back in addition.

The coroner asked her: “You had seen for yourself that he was able to do it on his own?” Ms Wilkins nodded.

The inquest heard that Mr Rose was found hanging in the early morning in a building a few doors down from where he lived in Wellhouse Lane, Hermitage, Berks., on December 13 2016.

Further reading from Ms Wilkins statement and describing the previous night, Mr Bedford continued: “You say he came back and said he was going for a drive, which wasn’t unusual. Sometimes he would unwind by going for a drive, but you went to sleep.”

The statement said that Ms Wilkins awoke at 5.15am and Toby had still not returned. She rang her neighbour Steve Vale who was Toby’s boss and who said he had seen Toby’s truck down the road near the old dairy.

Ms Wilkins said: “I saw Toby’s truck and opened the old dairy building door and saw him hanging with a ligature around his neck. I called Steve and in Toby’s truck I found a knife and used it to cut him down and laid him on the floor.

“I called an ambulance and while it was on the way I started administering CPR until the ambulance arrived.”

She added that she would never have thought Toby would hang himself but it was just an extension to what he had told her about.

A toxicology report revealed no alcohol or drugs in Mr Rose’ system while a post-mortem examination showed that asphyxiation by ligature was the cause of his death.

Although he admitted it was an accident and not an intended death, Mr Beford concluded it as “misadventure” given the calculated risk that accompanied erotic asphyxiation.

Explaining his misadventure verdict the coroner said: “It appears when someone does something deliberately that runs a risk to them. It seems to me a fair conclusion because Toby carried out much of the act deliberately.”
